CP Grade 2 titanium material properties

Heat Treatment

Grade 2 titanium undergoes heat treatments, including annealing and stress relieving, to optimize its material properties:

  • Annealing: Performed at temperatures between 1200°F and 1400°F, annealing softens the material, relieves residual stresses, and allows for controlled grain size adjustments.
  • Stress Relieving: Conducted at 900°F to 1100°F, this process reduces residual stresses from machining.
  • Hot Working: Recommended temperature range is 400°F to 600°F. During cold forming, the minimum bend radius should be controlled based on thickness (2T for thin sheets and 2.5T for thick plates).

Corrosion resistance

Grade 2 titanium exhibits excellent corrosion resistance due to its stable and self-healing oxide film:

Resistant to oxidizing, neutral, and mildly reducing environments, including chlorides, nitric acid, organic acids, and seawater.

Completely resistant in marine atmospheres, saltwater, and seawater environments up to 315ºC, making it ideal for chemical and marine industries.

Although sensitive to strong reducing acids and molten chloride salts, it demonstrates high resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in most chemical and moist environments. Proper design can further minimize crevice corrosion risks.

Wear resistance

Due to its low hardness and relatively soft surface, Grade 2 titanium has limited wear resistance:

Not ideal for high-friction or abrasive environments.

  • Tends to undergo adhesive wear when in contact with other materials.
  • Enhanced wear resistance is achieved through additional surface treatments, such as anodizing, wear-resistant coatings, or other surface hardening processes.

Applications requiring high wear resistance typically rely on surface-treated Grade 2 titanium to improve performance.

Weldability

Grade 2 titanium features excellent weldability and supports various welding methods, including GMAW, GTAW, electron beam welding, and laser welding. Key points:

No preheating or post-weld heat treatment is required.

Use inert gases like argon or helium to shield the weld zone and prevent absorption of oxygen, hydrogen, or nitrogen that may cause embrittlement.

The weld zone and surrounding areas must remain clean, using abrasives or chemical cleaning as needed.

For zones exceeding 450°C, trailing gas shielding is recommended to prevent oxidation.

Use AWS ERTi-2 compatible filler metals to maintain joint strength and corrosion resistance.

Machinability

Grade 2 titanium has machinability similar to austenitic stainless steel. Recommendations for improved results:

  • Cutting Conditions: Low cutting speeds, high feed rates, sharp tools, and ample coolant to enhance heat dissipation and reduce tool wear.
  • Hot Working: Can be hot rolled, forged, or hot pressed within a temperature range of 480-900°C.
  • Cold Working: Suitable for room-temperature processes like bending, stretching, and stamping. However, it hardens quickly and exhibits significant spring-back, requiring post-forming adjustments.

To avoid surface contamination or stress corrosion, use non-chlorinated cutting fluids and maintain continuous cutting. Note the high flammability of titanium chips during machining, ensuring safe handling procedures.

CP Grade 2 titanium additional information

Grade 1 titanium vs Grade 2 titanium

Both Grade 1 and Grade 2 are commercial pure (CP) titanium grades, known for their high corrosion resistance and excellent oxidation resistance. However, there are key differences:

  • Strength: Grade 2 titanium offers higher strength and a better strength-to-weight ratio compared to Grade 1.
  • Weldability and Cold Forming: Grade 2 exhibits superior weldability and cold forming properties, making it more suitable for applications requiring moderate strength in extreme environments.
  • Applications: Grade 2 is preferred for broader applications, especially where moderate strength and corrosion resistance are essential.

Grade 2 titanium vs Grade 5 titanium

Grade 2 titanium, a commercial pure titanium grade, is lightweight and highly corrosion-resistant. However, it differs significantly from Grade 5 titanium (Ti-6Al-4V), an alloy with enhanced mechanical properties:

  • Strength: Grade 2 has a good tensile strength suitable for medium-strength requirements in high-pressure or high-temperature systems. Grade 5, on the other hand, offers exceptionally high strength and heat resistance, making it ideal for aerospace, military, and high-performance industrial components.
  • Corrosion Resistance: Both grades provide excellent corrosion resistance, but Grade 2 is particularly advantageous in chemical and marine environments due to its pure titanium composition.
  • Applications: Grade 2 is used in applications with medium strength demands and where corrosion resistance is critical, while Grade 5 is favored for high-strength, high-performance environments requiring superior mechanical properties.
