Material properties of Ti-6Al-4V grade 5

Density

Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 titanium has a density approximately 50% lower than nickel-based alloys and stainless steel, making it highly desirable for applications requiring a high strength-to-weight ratio. It is commonly used in the annealed state and operates effectively at temperatures up to 400°C. For sections under 4 inches thick, heat treatment can achieve higher strength.

Melting point

With a melting point about 400°F higher than steel and 2000°F higher than aluminum, Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 is well-suited for operations in high-temperature environments.

Corrosion resistance

Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 exhibits exceptional corrosion resistance by spontaneously forming a dense titanium dioxide (TiO₂) layer on its surface. It is particularly effective in seawater and humid conditions, making it an ideal choice for offshore and subsea oil and gas operations.

Resistance to Acidic Environments: Performs well in most acidic conditions but can be vulnerable to red fuming nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid. Adding palladium, ruthenium, or palladium-nickel can significantly enhance corrosion resistance in these extreme environments.

Stress Corrosion Cracking: In hot saline environments, stress corrosion cracking may occur, requiring controlled processing to mitigate this risk.

Heat treatment

Heat treatments primarily focus on annealing to relieve stress and improve ductility and toughness. Common methods include:

Mill Annealing (MA): General-purpose annealing.

Recrystallization Annealing (RA): Improves mechanical properties by stabilizing the microstructure.

Beta Annealing (BA): Conducted above the beta-transus temperature for enhanced strength and creep resistance.

Additional strengthening can be achieved through solution treating and aging (STA) or over-aging (STOA), optimizing strength, toughness, and dimensional stability for complex manufacturing processes.

Machinability

Cold Machining: Similar to austenitic stainless steel, requiring low cutting speeds, high feed rates, and adequate coolant for efficient machining. Its low modulus of elasticity may lead to spring-back during cold work, making it ideal for drawing and extrusion operations.

Hot Machining: Performed at 870°C to 980°C, generating the desired microstructure while maintaining lower yield strength and hardness for improved ductility. Forming methods like hydroforming, stretch forming, and drop hammer forming reduce spring-back and forming force.

Formability

Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 offers excellent formability for both hot and cold forming, similar to 300-series stainless steel. Applications include bending, deep drawing, stretch forming, and spinning. Post-solution treated titanium can be cold formed and subsequently aged to achieve strengths of 1300 to 1500 MPa, ideal for high-precision industrial applications.

Weldability

Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 demonstrates good weldability under standard conditions with inert gas shielding to prevent embrittlement. Common methods include:

TIG Welding (Gas Tungsten Arc Welding): Preferred for most applications.

GMAW Welding (Gas Metal Arc Welding): Suitable for thicker sections.

Additional welding methods, such as plasma arc, electron beam, laser, resistance, and diffusion welding, are also applicable. Post-weld heat treatment and the use of Ti-6Al-4V filler material are recommended for optimal joint quality.
